Another gone

Henri Pousseur passed away yesterday at the age of 80.

I have enjoyed numerous pieces of his. He had such a variety of style and ideas. Maybe we should all be more like that.

Jazz trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard passed away.

There is an article from NPR about it HERE, with an audio interview with him from 2001.

R.I.P. - Another one gone

R. I. P.

The great Henry Brant died today. It is a sad day for me. I have grown quite fond of his music over the last few years. In particular his orchestration of Ives' Concord Sonata

He will be missed!

A Late Tribute....

Philip Booth (1925 - 2007)

Although this is quite late coming, I just found out about it. One of my favorite poets, Philip Booth, died last summer (July 2). He was a student of Robert Frost and was a witty and quirky poet. I set my favorite poem of his "Was A Man" some years ago, although maybe not an overly successful SATB setting, it was a delight maneuvering around his word play and sense of humor. He has several books of poetry that are well worth the investigation. He will be missed.

The Reaper was busy that day

Andrew Imbrie, a distinguished composer and teacher in the San Francisco area, died December 5th in his home in Berkeley, CA. He was 86 years old. He studied with Nadia Boulanger and and composed an enormous amount of work.

He taught at UC Berkeley, San Francisco Conservatory, as well as the Universities of Chicago, Alabama, British Columbia, Harvard, New York and Northwestern. And was composer in residence at Tanglewood for many years. He won many awards and citations.

His compositions ranged a wide variety of style and ensemble.

He will be missed.

(they say it comes in threes, but do they all have to be great composers)

Stockhausen has returned to Sirius

STOCKHAUSEN IS DEAD!!

20th century composer Karlheinz Stockhausen passed away on December 5th. It is a sad day in the world of experimental avant garde music.

He composed 362 individually performable works. So where did the un-performable works go?

I guess he calls God home now?

Farewell Karlheinz, you crazy man!

(So now his CDs are going to cost $60.00 a pop, instead of $30.00.)
